On watching episode two of The Web Planet...
Q: How drunk do you have to be to not find the fight between the Zarbi and the Menoptera utterly risible?

A: Drunker than I am at the moment.

On the upside, Hartnell gives a seriously ballsy performance when he confronts the Zarbi - which, under the circumstances, more than merits his being raised from the grave by forbidden magicks, dressed in a smartly tailored dinner suit, and presented with a posthumous BAFTA for Credible Acting in the Face of Very Silly Costumes.

I only know this episode from a novelisation I read thirty-odd years ago. I think the Zarbi were probably more alarming on the page.

Unfortunately I'm old enough to remember seeing the Zarbi story when it was first shown, although I'd forgotten that fact until I read the name just now. I also remember meeting Hartnell in person (in a railway compartment, travelling with my grandmother) and being disappointed that he didn't have flowing silver locks in real life - a bit of a slaphead, if I recall.

As for how good the story, the fighting or the costumes were, it all seemed very real to me at the time...

Yes, the flowing silver locks were always a wig ,which is a little disappointing. On the other hand, I am quite jealous of your meeting with Hartnell. He's one of my triumvirate of great doctors, along with Tom Baker and Christopher Eccleston.
